Live Preview

The live preview shows the real app beside your list of strings, so you can see where each string appears and how your Irish looks on the page.

Click Preview in a project's workspace to open it.

What it does

  • Shows your Irish as you type, saved or not, on the real page.
  • Outlines the string you are working on if it is on the page shown.
  • Lets you pick a string from the page: click Pick string, then click any text in the app. The editor jumps to that string and puts the cursor in its Irish box. You can also hold Alt and click at any time, without turning picking on. That way you can use the app normally to reach a screen, then Alt+click the text you want.
  • Filters to the page: tick Only strings on the previewed page to see just the strings on screen.

The preview toolbar

  • Branch: which deployment to show, for example the preview site or the live site.
  • Page: the page of the app to show.
  • Screen size: show the app at a common phone, tablet or computer size, turn it sideways, or fit it to the pane.
  • Connection: Connecting…, Connected or Not connected. Picking and live typing only work once the app is connected.
  • Follow (on by default): when you select a string that isn't on the page shown, the preview opens the page where that string was last seen and outlines it there.
  • Reload the page.

A line under the toolbar says whether the selected string is on the page. If it isn't, it says where it was seen, or that nobody has opened a page with it yet.

Things to know

  • Text in menus, tabs and dialogs only appears once they are open. Open them in the preview first.
  • Only translated text can be picked. Images, and text that isn't translated, can't be.
  • Pages behind a sign-in show the sign-in page unless you are signed in to that app in the same browser.
  • Picking finds nothing? The string may be hidden by your filters. The editor switches to All to show it.
  • Not connected? The app hasn't been set up for the preview, or doesn't allow the editor to show it. Tell an admin, or see Troubleshooting.

The preview's markers only exist inside the editor. Ordinary visitors to the app never see any of this.
